XMIND / MIND MAPS

Edit XMind files and export a PDF on iPhone

Open a modern .xmind package, select a sheet, and edit topic titles or add child and sibling topics. Save or Save as XMind keeps the editable file. Export Current Canvas offers PDF, PNG, SVG, Markdown, and TXT.

Before you start

  • A modern .xmind package using content.json, plus a backup. Legacy content.xml is outside the direct editing scope.
  • Download the complete file from cloud storage and have a writable source or Save As destination.
  • Check sheet names and output scope when the workbook has multiple sheets.

Step by step

  1. Open and select a sheet

Open the .xmind and use Switch Canvas in the file menu to choose the intended sheet. Confirm its central topic and hierarchy load correctly.

  2. Edit the topic tree

Select a node and change its title in the inspector. Add child or sibling topics as needed. Check selection before copying, moving, or deleting, and use supported undo and redo.

  3. Save the editable file

Save writes back when permitted. Use Save as XMind to keep the original. Reopen the saved copy and check topic titles, hierarchy, and sheets.

  4. Export the current sheet

Choose Export Current Canvas and PDF for reading and sharing. PNG, SVG, Markdown outline, and TXT outline are also available. Confirm the active sheet before exporting.

  5. Check both files

Inspect the PDF’s nodes and edges. For outlines, review indentation and text. Switch sheets and export separately when other sheets are needed.

Check your result

Keep both the reopened .xmind and the export. Verify the selected sheet, topic hierarchy, and complete text.

Scope and limitations

  • Editing focuses on modern topic trees and sheet titles. Relationship lines, boundaries, attachments, and complex styling are outside the main scope.
  • PDF, PNG, and SVG represent the current sheet’s topic tree; Markdown and TXT are current-sheet outlines, rather than a complete workbook conversion.
  • Exporting does not replace saving the .xmind. Use a copy and reopen it when exchanging with another mind-map app.

Troubleshooting

A legacy file does not open

It may use content.xml. Save a supported modern copy from a compatible source app, then try that copy.

An exported sheet is missing

Check the active sheet. Export runs on the current sheet; switch and export each additional sheet separately.

Complex styling differs

The editor focuses on the topic tree. Keep the source and inspect complex layouts in the originating app before delivery.

Common questions

Can I convert XMind to Markdown?

Export the current sheet as a Markdown outline for topic hierarchy and text. This does not migrate all attachments and complex formatting.

Can the PDF become the original XMind again?

Keep the .xmind for further editing. This workflow does not reconstruct its topic tree from a PDF.
